Grading Rules & Application Form

Grading Licensing

To licence a grading clubs must contact JudoScotland, 14 days before the grading to request a licence.  On receipt of this request JudoScotland will issue a grading registration sheet with a unique grading number. The grading registration sheet will have all current licence holders affiliated to that club who are eligible to grade.  The grading sheets must be completed in accordance with processing regulations (below) and returned to JudoScotland within 14 days after the grading. There is no fee to licence a grading.

Processing

Gradings will only be accepted and processed by JudoScotland if they are returned on officially licensed grading sheets that have been provided by JudoScotland. The grading information must be accurate, legible and signed by an individual with the authority to grade; examiners/coaches licence number or examining number must also be quoted (details shown below). 

All grade conversions must be included on licensed grading sheets.

JudoScotland will process gradings within 14 working days if information is accurate. If this cannot be achieved JudoScotland will contact the coach/examiner to make alternative arrangements.

On acceptance of the grading, clubs have 7 days to alter any information that is incorrect free of charge. Following this charges may apply.

Age Restrictions

Minimum Age

With regular study and training the judoka should be able to complete the syllabus by the age of 16. It is however vitally important that they follow the progressive study of the techniques detailed in this syllabus and attempt promotion to the next grade at regular intervals.
Promotion through the Kai grade system can be attempted at the age of 5. The minimum age a judoka may attempt a Mon grade promotion is 8 years old. Judoka can choose to seek promotion under the senior Kyu syllabus on reaching the age of 14.
Judoka aged 14/15 years do not require to take out a senior membership if they choose to seek promotion under the senior Kyu grade syllabus. Players are encouraged to seek advice from their coach on whether they should seek promotion under the Kyu grade syllabus.

JudoScotland will not accept grades that contravene the information provided in the table above. Players can meet the requirements and pass the technical grading for their next grade however; the grade will not be awarded until they reach the minimum age as stated above.

Authority to Grade

The following may conduct examinations in the revised JudoScotland grading regulations. They must have either a current valid coach or examiner’s card, hold a current individual JudoScotland membership and are the only ones authorised to submit a complete grading sheet.
