Sally Conway wins Bronze at Rio 2016 Olympic GamesPosted: 10/08/2016
Sally Conway (-70kg) makes the history books, winning a Bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics, making it the first Team GB Judo medal of Rio 2016 and the first ever Scottish Olympic medal.
As Day 6 got underway Sally defeated her first three opponents - Tunisian Houda Miled, French Gevrise Emane and Israeli Linda Bolder – spectacularly by Ippon, taking her through to the semi-finals to meet Colombia’s Yuri Alvear.
Unfortunately this was the end of Sally’s incredible winning streak as she lost out to Alvear in Golden Score, taking her into the repechage where she met Bernadette Graf of Austria. It was at this point Sally was able to turn things around, beating Graf to win the Olympic Bronze medal.
Since her Olympic debut in London 2012, Sally has shown incredible skill and determination on her journey to Rio, resulting in this incredible achievement, culminating in this incredible achievement
Ronnie Saez - JudoScotland Chairman - who was out in Rio attending the Olympic Judo event reacted “An absolutely outstanding result today for Sally, her Judo Club, Team GB, the British Judo Association and JudoScotland. I think it would also be appropriate to reflect on and congratulate Sally's family, coaches and support staff that have supported her on her journey from first steps onto the Judo mat to the Olympic Games in Rio."
Her Olympic Bronze medal is to be celebrated and would not have been possible without the support of the ‘Team behind the Team’, in particular her club (Edinburgh Judo), sportscotland, British Olympic Association, British Judo and in particular all of the hard working individuals at the sportscotland institute of sport.
