The 2019 British National Team Championships

Posted: 18/06/2019

The 2019 British National Team Championships are fast-approaching, with this years’ event taking place on Saturday 6 July at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell.  We’re delighted to be hosting this year’s event, with the championships being one of the most eagerly anticipated events within the British judo community.  It’s always an exciting and compelling day of judo, and this year’s competition is shaping up to be the same.  Each team will be competing for glory for their region, which will no doubt result in a day of passionate contests, with pride and medals at stake.

Scotland will be taking a team of 31 athletes to the event, with Head Coach Euan Burton emphasising the importance of such an event to the future of our performance pathway.  The British National Team Championships allows up-and-coming Judoka, some as young as 8, the opportunity to compete on the same team as the likes of former British Junior champion and current Senior European Open champion Josie Steele.  It’s hoped this will provide inspiration with younger athletes able to learn from more experienced athletes on the team, whilst also being able to showcase their own skills and capabilities on a national stage.  Burton also credits the event with offering athletes the chance to add to the rich history of Team Scotland.  It is a history that has seen players such as Mullen, Randall, Buchanan, Ramsay, Renwicks and Conway proudly step up the tatami for Scotland.  The prospect of walking out on to the mat and following in the footsteps of great Scottish Judoka is an exciting one, with the chance for our athletes to write their own names in our history.

Last year’s contest saw the medals distributed across the board, with most teams achieving success across one category or another. This year, Scotland will be looking to capitalise on having home advantage with medals firmly in the team’s sights, especially in front of a lively home crowd.

The Pre-Cadet category boasts two British champions in Sunny Doig and Miai McCran.  The Girls Cadet Category will be represented by British Cadet champion Christy Simpson, as well as Daisy Gilroy who’ll compete for Team GB at the 2019 EYOF (European Youth Olympic Festival).  The Boys Category has British Junior silver medallist, Andrew McWatt, as well as Finlay Allan who is a member of GB Elite Development Squad.  An incredible 10 of the 11 players in the Senior Team are on the GB Senior or Junior squads, with Josie Steele and British Senior champions Emily Ritchie and Malin Wilson taking to the mat in the senior age category at this year’s event.

It’s all set to be a fantastic day of judo; we hope to see you there cheering on our JudoScotland athletes, ‘geein’ it laldy!’ Spectators can purchase tickets on the day of the event for £3.
