Sally Conway announced as Team GB flag bearerPosted: 21/06/2019
Olympic and Commonwealth Games Bronze medallist Sally Conway has been announced as the Team GB flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 2019 European Games being held in Minsk, Belarus. Currently ranked 7th in the world, the 32-year-old will lead Team GB into the Dinamo Stadium on 21 June for the second edition of the event. Conway, who is Scotland’s first Judo Olympic medallist has consistently demonstrated hard work, determination and humility to achieve the success she has achieved, and is well deserving of such an accolade.
Accepting the accolade, Conway said: "Being asked to carry the flag at the European Game is a massive honour. I’m over the moon to have been asked to lead the team out on Friday. This is for sure a once in a lifetime opportunity and I can’t wait".
Competing in the women’s middleweight category on Sunday 23rd June, she’ll be looking to add a European Games medal to her collection after missing out in Baku in 2015. Fellow Scottish judoka’s Sarah Adlington and Stuart McWatt will be joining Sally in Minsk where they’ll compete in the women’s heavyweight (Monday 24 June) and men’s middleweight (Monday 24 June) categories respectively. With 5 World Cups, a Commonwealth gold medal and multiple British championships under her belt, 32-year-old Adlington will be looking to add to her tally with a European Games medal after missing out in Baku in 2015. McWatt makes his European Games debut coming off the back of a successful run of results, including silver medals at the European Open in both 2018 and 2019. The transition from junior to senior competitions has been a relatively smooth one thus far, and a European Games medal will no doubt be high on the agenda for 21-year old McWatt.
Minsk 2019 represents the last senior multi-sport event prior to next summer’s Olympic Games and will provide invaluable experience for the British athletes hoping to travel to Tokyo. Team GB will compete at Minsk 2019 in archery, badminton, boxing, canoe sprint, cycling, gymnastics, judo, karate, shooting, table tennis and wrestling.
The event is running from June21-30, with the Opening Ceremony on Friday 21st June. Coverage of the European Games will be shown on BT Sport, providing daily, live coverage of the Games throughout each day of competition.
