WEEKEND ROUND-UP: 2019 Malaga European CupPosted: 21/10/2019
JudoScotland athletes were in action in Spain at the 2019 Malaga European Cup this weekend, with bronze medal success for Neil Macdonald in the -66kg category.
Macdonald secured his first international medal at this weight category with Alex Short finishing closely behind him in 5th place, highlighting the positive performances on display from both judoka in what was a strong category. Both players had five matches with Macdonald winning four in a row following a loss in the first round, and Short winning three of his five. In the -73kg category, Aiden Moffat finished outside the medal zone in 9th place; this was the 'busiest' category of the event with a grand total of 42 judoka competing. Despite putting in some strong performances in closely-fought contests where he brought significant pressure, Moffat was unable to convert it into scores on the board on this occasion. Whilst Macdonald's was the only medal returning home from this trip, there were plenty of positive performances from JudoScotland athletes which can be built upon over the coming months.
The European international season has now drawn to a close and many of our athletes will now have their eyes firmly on the British Championships at the beginning of December. For Adlington, Conway, McWatt, Renicks and Sherrington there are still Olympic qualifiers across Abu Dhabi, Perth, Tokyo and China before 2019 comes to a close, with the Olympic year approaching in 2020.
JudoScotland athletes: Scott Cusack (-81kg), David Ferguson (-60kg), Neil Macdonald (-66kg), Tommy Mercer (-81kg), Aiden Moffat (-73kg), Alex Short (-66kg), Hazel Taylor (-70kg), Rachel Tytler (-78kg)
