WEEKEND ROUND-UP: 2019 Tallinn European OpenPosted: 14/10/2019
JudoScotland athletes were in action in Estonia at the 2019 Tallinn European Open this weekend. Whilst no medals joined our judoka on the plane trip home, there were many positives to take away from the event as well as invaluable experience on the mat.
There were Top 7 finishes for 3 of the 7 judoka as Malin Wilson (-57kg), David Ferguson (-60kg) and Cailin Calder (-100kg) all progressed to the Quarter Finals before falling short in the repechage.
This was Calder’s first Top 8 placing as a senior at this level, whilst Ferguson made the Quarter Finals for the first time since his Bronze medal at the 2016 Asian Open. Both players defeated seeded opposition in their route to the Quarter Finals, with Ferguson taking out No. 4 seed Siccardi (MON) and Calder defeating No. 7 seed Alli (FIN). Wilson is becoming a regular in the Top 8 at international level and will be looking to push on to regular international podium finishes in 2020.
There were early rounds ippon wins for both Stuart McWatt and Scott Cusack in the 81kg category before both lost in the last 16 to eventual medallists Pierre (FRA) and Djalo (FRA).
The tour continues the 2019 Malaga European Cup next weekend, and the 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam the week after.
